Boxing Day in Charleston

I love those days in between Christmas and New Year’s… when holiday decorations are still up but just barely hanging on. Pine needles collecting under the tree, oversized bows starting to sag, poinsettas beginning to wilt – well, at least that’s how it looks on December 26th in the south. And since it’s been an especially balmy holiday season this year, even Charleston (which is ‘up north’ to me) was looking a little unseasonable. But Charleston is beautiful anytime of year – and I have to say that as I sit here blogging on a 65 degree, rainy, January afternoon in Florida – I take back everythiing I said about wishing it felt like winter!

Not only is Charleston an amazing town to visit because of the history, culture and gorgeous downtown – it’s now home to most of Brett’s family. This visit was especially fun because it’s the first time all 5 cousins have met. The last time we were all together, Isla and her cousin Marley were just little babies! They all had so much fun together. Cousins are so special – they’re like half sibling, half friend. I knew the little ones would enjoy playing but what really surprised me was how attached Isla became to Rylin. She is still asking about ‘that big guy who pushed me in the stroller’. In fact, if I could just adopt an 11 year old I think I might go for a third child.

Here is a look at our trip – lots of car time, singing and dancing all night, downtown Charleston and some shopping, Fort Moultrie and the beach, a cookout and lots of downtime. An ice cream truck even drove by the house at one point – which is basically the quintessential cousin activity! Not pictured: my trip to a walk in clinic for pink eye and strep throat. I’m kinda of shocked that any of the pictures are in focus (a few are but plenty aren’t!) because I took all of these using only my left eye – which was so weird! I only fell down the stairs once though!
